Tractor PTO inspection — how to tell if PTO is bad

PTO problems on the tractor side are distinct from shaft problems. Both require systematic diagnosis.

Knowing whether your PTO is bad requires distinguishing between three separate systems: the tractor PTO gearbox and clutch, the PTO drive shaft itself, and the implement input. A bad tractor PTO — the mechanical system inside the tractor — shows different symptoms from a failing shaft. This guide covers diagnostic steps for both the tractor PTO system and the shaft, so you can identify which component is actually failing.

Signs the Tractor PTO System Is Bad

PTO Will Not Engage

If the PTO lever or switch is activated but the shaft does not rotate, the fault is in the tractor PTO engagement system. On mechanical engagement tractors, this is typically a worn or broken PTO clutch. On hydraulic-engagement tractors, it may be low hydraulic pressure to the PTO clutch pack, a faulty solenoid, or a hydraulic valve issue. Check the operator manual for the PTO engagement circuit before attempting diagnosis.

PTO Engages but Slips Under Load

PTO slip — the shaft rotates at no load but loses speed or stops under implement load — indicates a worn PTO clutch. On older tractors with dry-plate PTO clutches, wear is gradual and detectable as decreasing slip-point threshold. On tractors with wet clutch PTO, slip indicates oil contamination (wrong oil type, water ingress) or pressure loss in the hydraulic circuit.

PTO Engages Violently or Causes Tractor Lurch

Violent PTO engagement — a sudden jolt rather than a smooth power build-up — indicates the PTO clutch is engaging too abruptly. On mechanical systems this is a clutch adjustment issue. On hydraulic systems it may be a pressure-rise rate adjustment in the PTO valve. Violent engagement is also very hard on the PTO shaft and implement gearbox — it creates torque spikes that can fracture cross-kit yokes.

Cross-kit wear is a shaft problem. PTO slip, violent engagement, and no rotation are tractor-side problems.

Signs the PTO Drive Shaft Is Bad

  • Vibration at any PTO speed — cross-kit bearing wear. Inspect both joints for radial play.
  • Clicking or knocking under load — significant cross-kit wear or a displaced bearing cup.
  • Implement running erratically — shaft vibration causing cyclically uneven power delivery.
  • Visible rust at cross-kit bearing faces — seal failure and bearing contamination.
  • Safety shield rotating with the shaft — plastic bearing seized; separate safety issue.

The Elimination Test

The most reliable way to determine whether the problem is in the tractor PTO or the shaft is to disconnect the shaft entirely and engage the tractor PTO alone. If the PTO stub rotates smoothly at the correct speed with no noise, vibration, or slip, the tractor PTO system is serviceable. If the symptoms persist with no shaft connected, the fault is in the tractor. If symptoms resolve with no shaft, reconnect the shaft and test with a different implement — if symptoms return, the shaft is the problem.

    Disengage PTO completely and allow shaft to stop. Disconnect the shaft at both ends.

    Re-engage the tractor PTO and observe the PTO stub rotation: smooth, at speed, no slip, no vibration.

    If stub is normal: reconnect shaft, test with a different implement. If same symptom, shaft is the fault.
