The PTO shaft drives virtually every implement category in agricultural use — from compact tillers to large square balers.

A PTO shaft is used to transmit engine power from a tractor to any implement that requires rotational drive. This covers the majority of powered agricultural implements: rotary tillers, mowers, balers, forage harvesters, spreaders, seeders, sprayers, irrigation pumps, and more. The PTO shaft is also used in construction (concrete mixers, auger drives), utilities (generators, hydraulic pumps), and some industrial applications. Agricultural Field Crop Implements

PTO-driven rotary tiller — crop cultivation application

Rotary tillers are the most common PTO application in the compact tractor market.

  • Rotary tillers: T1–T4 or L1–L4 for 10–40 hp compact tractors. The tiller’s rotor is driven directly by PTO at 540 rpm.
  • Rotary mowers: T4–T6 or L4–L6 for 30–70 hp tractors. Blade disc driven at 540 rpm through implement gearbox.
  • Disc mowers and mower-conditioners: T6–T7, L6, or S6–S7 for 50–80 hp. High continuous load with flywheel inertia at blade change.
  • Fertiliser spreaders: T3–T5 for 20–50 hp. Impeller driven at 540 rpm; low shock loading but continuous duty.
  • Rotary seeders / combination drills: T3–T5 for 25–55 hp. Fan and metering drive.

Harvesting Implements

Round and square balers are among the highest-torque PTO applications, requiring T5–T10 or S6–S10 series shafts.

  • Round balers: T5–T7, L5–L6, or S6–S7 for 35–80 hp. Pick-up reel, baling chamber, and bale eject all PTO-driven.
  • Large square balers: T8–T10, S8–S10 for 80–160 hp. Plunger, knotters, and feeders demand the highest PTO shaft torque class in standard agricultural use.
  • Forage harvesters: T7–T10, S8–S10 for 65–200 hp. Flywheel and feed roller drive — continuous high-torque duty.
  • Forage wagons: T6–T8, S6–S8 for 50–100 hp. Pick-up reel and auger drive.
  • Straw choppers: T6–T8 for 50–100 hp. High inertia rotor drive — torque limiter strongly recommended.

Utility and Infrastructure Applications

Irrigation pump drives run continuously for extended periods — sealed IP67 cross kits are essential for this duty cycle.

  • Irrigation pumps: T4–T7 for 25–80 hp. Continuous duty at 540 rpm — the most demanding greasing regime of any agricultural PTO application.

  • Generators: T5–T8 for 35–100 hp. Farm backup power generation — high continuous load, often at 1,000 rpm.
  • Wood chippers and mulchers: T7–T10 or S8–S10 for 65–160 hp. Extreme slug loading — shear bolt torque limiter mandatory.
  • Grain augers: T3–T5 for 20–50 hp. Continuous moderate-torque duty, often with long run times.

Construction and Industrial Applications

Truck-mounted PTO systems drive cement mixers, refuse compactors, and crane hydraulic pumps in construction and utility vehicle applications.

Beyond agriculture, PTO shafts are used in construction (cement mixers, auger drills), municipal utilities (refuse vehicle compactors, gulley suckers), and marine vessels (deck winches, anchor windlasses).
